Joel Brouwer is a poet, photographer, critic, and professor, not necessarily in that order. He is the author of Exactly What Happened (Purdue University Press, 1999), Centuries (Four Way Books, 2003), And So (Four Way Books, 2009), and Off Message (Four Way Books, 2016). He has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. His poems, essays, and reviews have appeared in AGNI, Boston Review, Chelsea, Crazyhorse, Georgia Review, Gettysburg Review, Iowa Review, Massachusetts Review, McSweeney’s, New England Review, The New York Times Book Review, Paris Review, Parnassus, Ploughshares, Poetry, The Progressive, Tin House, Washington Post Book World, and other publications. He lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and teaches at The University of Alabama, where he is chair of the Department of English.
